![]() It's absolutely possible to use synthesia and supplement recordings for tempo indications and dynamic markings you would get with sheet music. ![]() I brought up Nobu as a counter to the idea that sheet music is absolutely necessary and that synthesia has a lack of information present if you read the rest of the paragraph on that page, you'll see that Nobody actually has less information to work with in some cases (rhythm and note length) than somebody using synthesia, yet he's one of the most skilled pianists alive. The original topic of discussion was if it was possible to learn classical piano with synthesia, you said "good post, and all true" meaning you also agree with when OP said "if you solely rely on, you'll never learn piano. There's no shortcuts to learning how to play an instrument, you have to work past the frustration and you have to put in the time. It's great for practicing particular songs when you're having trouble with the sheet music, but if you're solely relying on it you'll never actually learn to play the piano. Synthesia can be useful after you've acquired the ability to read music. I recommend Sight Reading Trainer if you're using a midi keyboard. Practice sight reading, there's a lot of great resources online.You can also try apps like Melodics for that (though you shouldn't rely on it, it's very similar to synthesia) Learn proper fingering, there's lot of tutorials on YouTube.Learn the basics of reading sheet music, there's a lot of great videos on YouTube.Learn where all the notes are on the piano if you haven't already.Get a metronome, whenever you're practicing make sure you're practicing with it.Getting a good piano teacher is your best bet, but you can learn to play and read sheet music without one. Learning happens when you work past frustration, and learning music theory and how to read sheet music will be frustrating, but I promise you it's worth it if you really want to learn how to play piano. The problem is, if you've put months/years into synthesia and you hit the skill ceiling, going back to learn how to play properly will be much harder then if you started off with theory and sheet music. ![]() Pianists who just learn via synthesia will always hit a skill ceiling where they can't improve. You may feel like you're playing piano, but you're playing a game. Trying to learn how to play piano and only using synthesia is like trying to learn how to drive by playing a racing game.
